Ashcombe Estate

Forestry

Ashcombe manages approximately 600 acres of woodland under a 20-year plan approved by the Forestry Commission. This long-term approach ensures a balance between commercial productivity, environmental stewardship, and landscape enhancement. The woodlands produce high-quality timber and fuel wood, all harvested sustainably.

Around half of the woodland is coniferous, with the remainder made up of native broadleaf species. Managed as ‘uneven-aged’ woodland, this structure supports a rich diversity of habitats, helping to maximise wildlife across the estate.

Tree planting is an ongoing priority. Over the past two years, more than 4,000 new trees have been established, alongside 400 cider apple trees planted in new and restored orchards. Looking ahead, the Estate plans to create additional woodland areas connected to existing plantations—strengthening biodiversity, supporting carbon sequestration, and increasing future timber production.

The woodland is also a place for people to connect with nature. A range of activities take place throughout the year, including forest school sessions with A Touch of the Wild, guided Forage Walks, and mountain biking events hosted by Grammarcombe MTB.
